COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL PREVIEW

Here are some items the council will consider Tuesday.

PROPERTY PURCHASE

The council will vote on whether to spend $3.5 million to buy a 1.19-acre parcel at 261 Monte Vista Ave. to use as park land or for a community center. The property was last occupied by the Park Private Day School, which closed in June.

A recent city study showed a need for more parks and community centers in the eastern part of the city, but the buildings on the property would need to be renovated for use as public facilities. The property is next to Brentwood Park, which has a playground and picnic area.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council probably will agree to purchase the property. Public opinion would be solicited on how to use the parcel.

LOFTS REZONING

If the council agrees, residential lofts could be built at 2460 and 2472 Newport Blvd. The project includes a two-story, 14-unit building on a 0.91-acre lot, but the parcel needs to be rezoned from business to high-density residential use.

The units would be multi-family town homes for sale.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council probably will approve the rezoning, because the loft development is expected to reduce traffic compared with what could be built under the current zoning, and it would provide more home ownership opportunities.
