BASEBALL
UC Irvine 15, Houston 6
HOUTSON — The Anteaters erased a 6-4 deficit with a four-run seventh and continued to pull away with a 17-hit attack Saturday in the second game of a three-game nonconference road series with the Cougars.
Senior outfielder Matt Morris went five for five with an RBI, while junior outfielder Taylor Holiday went three for five with a home run and a double, to drive in four runs for the winners.
Senior Cody Cipriano, who also homered, and junior Taylor Vaughn had two hits and three RBIs apiece for the Anteaters (5-2-1), who used five pitchers.
Freshman Reid Suitor earned his first victory with just 1/3 inning, and Thomas Calahan and Eric Pettis combined to blank the Cougars (3-4) the final three innings.
Sophomore Ben Orloff also had two hits for UCI, which will try to sweep the series today.

Vanguard 4, Biola 3
LA MIRADA — Luke Iverson hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning to the lead the Lions to a 4-3 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.
The Lions led 8-2 in the second game of the doubleheader, which was suspended due to darkness.
Vanguard pitcher Derek Craddock in relief in the bottom of the 10th inning and allowed just one hit over four innings in earning his first win of the year.
The Lions will resume the suspended game when the two teams meet again at Vanguard on March 31.

COSTA MESA — Mike Ferraro and Cory Olson each went three for five with two runs and two RBIs against College of the Canyons to help the Pirates split in their two nonconference games Saturday at Orange Coast.
Chris Lum led OCC (7-5) in the first game, going two for two with two RBIs. But the Pirates committed four errors that led to four runs. Their pitchers also allowed eight walks.
OCC will play at College of the Desert Tuesday at 2 p.m.

SAN FRANCISCO — UC Irvine senior Nic Campbell scored a career-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, but the Anteaters shot 35.4% from the field to drop this BracketBusters game Saturday on the Dons’ floor.
Campbell made nine of 18 from the field, but the rest of the Anteaters were just 14 of 47 on field-goal tries (29.8%).
UCI senior Mark Kelley had 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds off the bench, while Patrick Sanders added 10 points for UCI (12-16).
USF is (12-15), which shot 52.7% from the field, was led by Alan Wiggins Jr., who had 19 points.

AZUSA — The Lions shot 54.5% from the field to take a 42-39 halftime lead, but sot just 28.1% from the field the final 20 minutes in this Golden State Athletic Conference road game Saturday.
APU (22-5, 12-5 in conference), shot 51.7% in the second half to prevail.
Freshman Dennis Heenan led the Lions (6-20, 3-14) with 17 points.

COSTA MESA — Senior shortstop Rachel Bomgren singled in the game-winner in the 1-0 first game, then went three for four with three runs in the second game to help the Lions sweep a nonconference doubleheader at home Saturday.
Bomgren, a returning NAIA All-American, went five for six in the two games.
Jennifer Olvera threw eight shutout innings to win the first game, allowing just two hits and striking out nine. She is now 3-0.
Jennifer Rynda allowed no earned runs and five hits in seven innings to win the second game and improve to 3-1.
Vanguard, which has won eight in a row, is now 9-2, while Chapman fell to 6-2.

STOCKTON — Matt Webber led the third-ranked Anteaters to a 30-23, 30-20, 30-25 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over the Tigers, ranked No. 11, Saturday.
Cole Reinholm added 10 kills and Jayson Jablonsky contributed 10 kills for UCI, which won its third straight match and improved to 15-3, 9-3 in the MPSF. Aaron Harrell recorded six kills, two aces and a match-high seven block assists, while Brian Thornton amassed 37 assists for the visitors.
UCI will play at UC Santa Barbara, which is also ranked No. 3, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Vanguard 90, Azusa Pacific 74
AZUSA — Junior Jessica Richter scored 22 points and senior Rachel Besse added 20 to help the No. 1-ranked Lions extend a pair of winning streaks in the Golden State Athletic Conference road game Saturday.
Vanguard (22-0, 17-0 in conference) have won 55 straight regular-season games and 43 consecutive regular-season conference games.
Besse made 10 of 14 field-goal tries and haded six rebounds, while senior Kelly Schmidt had 16 points, a team-high eight rebounds and five assists.
APU fell to 21-5, 13-4.

COSTA MESA — Brandon Babiracki, Kyle Peterson, Josh Strickland and Chris Macke each won two events to help the host Pirates record two Orange Empire Conference victories Friday in a double dual meet.
Babiracki won the 1,500 meters (4 minutes, 4.22 seconds) and the 800 (1:57:71), while Peterson topped the field in the 110 high hurdles (16.82) and the pole vault (14 feet, 3 inches).
Strickland, a Costa Mesa High product, won the 100 (11.34) and the 200 (22.92), while Macke won the high jump (6-0) and the long jump (22-10 1/2 ).
Other individual winners for the Pirates included Morgan Rose (50.77 in the 400), Scott Burbach (189-4 in the javelin) and Clint Parga (41-0 1/2 in the triple jump).

COSTA MESA — Madison Empting won the 200 meters (28.62) and the 400 (1:02.83) to help the Pirates claim two wins in an Orange Empire Conference double dual meet Friday.
Brenda Finney (18.6 in the 100 hurdles), Erendira Uriostegui (2:23.4 in the 800), Tirza Mejia (1:18.16 in the 400 hurdles) and Brittany Ickes (104-2 in the javelin), won events for the Pirates.
