BRIEFLY IN PUBLIC SAFETY
Police to check driver’s licenses this afternoon
The Costa Mesa Police Department will conduct a driver’s license and DUI checkpoint today from noon to 4 p.m., police said. It will take place on the westbound side of Victoria Street, just west of Harbor Boulevard.
Police said they will be checking for valid driver’s licenses, as well as keeping an eye out for other violations.
According to a news release from the Police Department, the purpose is to remove drivers with suspended or revoked licenses from the road, as well as to educate the public about the dangers of driving under the influence.
Bayshore Beach closed after sewage spill
The County of Orange Health Care Agency closed a section of Newport Beach early Tuesday in response to a small sewage spill.
A pipeline blockage spilled about 150 gallons of sewage into the bay, said agency spokeswoman Monica Mazur.
Half of that amount was recovered and kept out of the water, she said.
As a result, Bayshore Beach in the Bayshore gated community is closed to swimmers and others who touch the water, Mazur said. It will not open again until at least Friday, as the area must pass two consecutive water-quality tests.
