Eight Oilers garner honors
Eight members of the Huntington Beach High football team have been named to the 2006 All-Sea View League team, Oilers Coach Mike Groscost said.
Named to the first team were senior running back Stephen Gabbard, senior linemen Skyler Fancher and Finau Fiaseu and junior running back/lineman Justin Niuapuai.
Oilers named to the second team were senior offensive lineman/defensive back Tyler Haunreiter, senior running back/cornerback Junior Rodriguez, junior running back/defensive back Johnny Olivé and junior tight end/defensive back Keith Roberts.
Gabbard set the school single season rushing record this year, eclipsing the old mark set by Patrick Harrigan (1,958 yards in 2003).
Gabbard rushed 276 times for 2,264 yards and 26 touchdowns. He averaged 226 yards per game and 8.2 yards per carry.
Defensively, Rodriguez was the team’s leader in tackles with an average of 11 per game and Niuapuai and Haunreiter led the Oilers with five sacks each.
Groscost also said that just before Christmas, Fancher gave a verbal commitment to the University of Washington.
Fancher and Fiaseu were known as the “twin towers” on the football field, Groscost said.
“We had some really strong players this year,” Groscost said. “The kids who made all-league are very deserving of the honor. They’re great kids.”
Huntington Beach went 2-3 in its first year competing in the Sea View League. Foothill, which won the league championship, dominated the all-league team and garnered the league’s top two honors.
