Man convicted of having child porn
Prosecutors say they intend to seek a new trial against a German tourist convicted of possessing child pornography because the jury deadlocked on molestation charges.
On Tuesday, a jury convicted Michael Roeder, 27, of possession and control of child pornography, but jurors could not return a verdict on whether he committed lewd acts on a child.
Prosecutors allege that Roeder molested an 8-year-old girl at Newport Dunes Aquatic Park while traveling the California coast. They said he did not know the girl.
Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney’s office, said prosecutors will announce at a hearing on Jan. 5 that they intend to try Roeder again.
Emami said sentencing for the first conviction is not scheduled yet, and further information about those proceedings will come out after the hearing at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
