GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL:Locals receive honors
Newport Harbor High senior Katie Wells, as well as Corona del Mar High senior Juliane Piggott and Kelly Christian earned All-CIF Southern Section honors for their performances in girls volleyball this past season.
They, along with a handful of their teammates, also received all-league recognition.
Wells, who helped lead the Sailors to a share of the Sunset League championship, was named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division I second team. Mira Costa’s Alix Klineman was named Player of the Year.
Wells was also a first-team All-Sunset League selection, along with teammates Alesha Young, a junior, and Megan Toman, a senior.
Juniors Megan Munce and Jamie Heenan were second-team all-league honorees for the Sailors, and junior Cassidy Gayner received honorable mention.
Los Alamitos’ Geena Urango was named the league’s MVP.
For the Sea Kings, Piggott and Christian, who led CdM to a Pacific Coast League championship, were first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division II selections. Piggott, bound for UCLA, recorded 341 kills for the Sea Kings. Christian, who also earned first-team All-CIF honors as a sophomore, amassed 338 kills, 340 assists and 250 digs this season, as she helped lead Corona del Mar to the semifinals of CIF Southern Section Division II-AA and CIF State southern region. Christian has committed to the University of Washington.
Laguna Beach’s Dana Hutchinson and Pasadena’s Kimmee Roleder shared the Player of the Year award.
Piggott and Christian shared the MVP honor for the PCL.
Kasey Kipp, a senior who has committed to UC Santa Barbara, as well as junior Kara Chatham and junior libero Ashley Pries were named to the All-PCL first team.
Kipp, a middle blocker, recorded 267 kills and 565 blocks for the Sea Kings. Chatham, an outside hitter, finished the season with 86 kills and Pries had 188 digs.
The All-PCL second team included freshman Madison Smith, junior Jamie Lawson, senior Shannon Johnson and sophomore Conley Kipp.
Smith collected 188 digs and 57 assists. Lawson, a setter, amassed 440 assists.
