HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:CdM advances to tournament semis

WESTMINSTER — Corona del Mar High junior Stefan Kaluz scored a team-high 12 points, leading the Sea Kings’ boys’ basketball team to a 50-45 quarterfinal victory over Edison in the La Quinta Tournament on Wednesday at La Quinta High.

Austin Evett contributed 10 points and John Joyce added nine for the Sea Kings (3-0), who hung on after taking a seven-point halftime lead.

CdM plays Inglewood in the tournament semifinals on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at La Quinta High.

NEWPORT COAST — Connor Rose clinched the defensive battle by hitting two free throws with 16 seconds left to stretch the Lightning’s lead to three points as Sage Hill won the nonleague game Wednesday.

NEWPORT BEACH — Grant McKee notched the fastest pin of the night, in 44 seconds at the 103-pound division, as the Sailors cruised to the nonleague victory over Tustin Wednesday.

Bryan Bennett recorded a pin in 1:09 at 215 pounds, Eddie Garcia won by pin in 1:06 at 112 and Ryan Dickey scored a pin in 1:18 at 171 pounds.

Brian Beaudette, wrestling in the heavyweight division, Bruce Hartshorn, 189, Rush Stevens, 152, Josh George, 135, Byron Palafox, 130 and Nick Bernstein, 119, all won by forfeit. The Sailors next dual match is Tuesday at home against University at 5 p.m.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Ashley Kirby led the Sea Kings with 20 points and eight rebounds in the second game of pool play at the Baron Classic at Fountain Valley High.

Allie Duernberger added eight points for Corona del Mar (2-2).
