SOCCER: The girls from the Newport-Mesa District will vie for the area’s championship today through Saturday.
For the first time ever, the four Newport-Mesa District high schools will compete against one another in a girls’ soccer preseason tournament.
The inaugural tournament will include junior varsity and freshman-sophomore divisions, along with the schools’ varsity squads vying for the area’s championship.
The tournament begins today in round-robin style.
Corona del Mar High will face Back Bay rival Newport Harbor on the Sea Kings’ varsity field at 3:15 p.m., while Costa Mesa and Estancia play at the Sea Kings’ field located on the inner track at 3:15 p.m.
Estancia takes on Corona del Mar at the Orange Coast College soccer field at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Newport Harbor will play against Costa Mesa at 3:30 p.m. on the Orange Coast soccer field Friday. Estancia plays Newport Harbor at 9 a.m. on Saturday, when Corona del Mar plays Costa Mesa at 10:30 a.m.
The first- and second-place teams, based on record, will play for the championship at 2:30 p.m. at CdM. The third-place game is at 1 p.m. at CdM.

Boys soccer competition for the area title will be later this month.
