Father, daughter arrested in burglaries

Newport Beach police have arrested a father and a daughter in connection with a rash of burglaries of four local businesses, police said.

Los Angeles residents Donald Perkins, 48, and Kenesha Perkins, 28, were arrested Monday on suspicion of commercial burglary.

Officers stopped the two in a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am that passed by the officers with no license plates near Dove Street and Newport Place Drive, police said. When they pulled the car over, they discovered cash boxes, gloves and brick dust inside the car in plain view, police said.

Just a few minutes later, police responded to a burglar alarm at Luxury Nails and Spa at 4251 Martingale Way, where someone had used a brick to smash the front window. It was one of four known break-ins by the same method that night. The burglars stole cash and jewelry. The other businesses burglarized were Alicia’s Flowers and Gifts, 1701 Corinthian Way, Fax & Mail, 4533 MacArthur Blvd., and a dentist’s office at 4250 Scott Drive.

Police said they found all of the stolen items inside the Perkins’ vehicle. Donald Perkins was being held at Newport Beach Police Jail Monday, while Kenesha Perkins was taken to Orange County Jail. Bail has been set at $20,000 each.

Two suspects sought in store robbery

Police are looking for two suspects who held up a Costa Mesa convenience store early Monday. At about 2:20 a.m., a man and a female walked into the 7/11, 1097 Baker St., picked out some items and brought them to the register, but one of them threatened the clerk with a gun and demanded cash, police said. The robbers fled in a new model dark silver Volkswagen Bug.

Police said the man is Latino, between 20 to 27 years old, is about 5-foot-9 and weighs about 180 pounds. He was clean-shaven and had a shaved head and was wearing a dark brown jacket and gray pants. The other suspect is about 5-foot-5, weighs about 130 pounds, has long, wavy, blond hair and is Latino. She was wearing a light-colored sweater with brightly colored slacks.

Man arrested as suspect in DUI crash

Two people were seriously hurt in a drunken-driving crash Sunday night on Jamboree Road just south of Santa Barbara Drive in Newport Beach that caused a power outage in the area, police said.

Ozcakir Levent, 27, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence. The passenger, who police refused to identify as a man or a woman, suffered a broken back in the crash.

Levent was taken, along with his passenger, to Western Regional Medical Center for treatment of major injuries, police said. But hospital officials say they have no record of him being there.

Workers were still repairing the damaged power pole at noon on Monday, and the lane remained closed.

The exact time of crash, as well as a description of the car, were not available Monday evening because the police report had not been finished, Newport Beach Police spokesman Evan Sailor said.
