COSTA MESA — The Lions’ victory in a NAIA Region II semifinal Friday sent Vanguard to its first region championship and tied for their most victories in a season at 13.

Vanguard will face top-ranked Azusa Pacific Tuesday in the championship game.

Junior Rachel Housepian scored the game’s only goal in the 25th minute. Senior Heather Hutton sent in a ball toward the near post which ricocheted off a defender to Housepian who scored her 18th goal of the season.

All-Golden State Athletic Conference goalkeeper Marissa Swift posted three saves for the shutout.

ANTELOPE VALLEY — Elda Hernandez’s seventh place finish in 20 minutes, 24 seconds led the Pirates to a fourth-place finish Friday, snapping the Pirates’ streak of five straight victories at the meet.

The Pirates qualified for the state meet as Erendira Uriostegui was 11th in 20:37, Kristen Glen 37th in 21:28, Kimberly Jennings 38th in 21:29 and Claire Fleming 74th in 22:34.

ANTELOPE VALLEY — Martin Bernard’s 13th place finish in 22 minutes, 50 second led the Pirates to a ninth-place finish Friday.

Former Estancia star Ernesto Castaneda was 15th in 22:55, Nathaniel Mouzis was 40th in 23:31, Travis Foerster was 85th in 24:21 and Alfonso Silvas was 96th in 24:36.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 2, Golden West 2

COSTA MESA — The Pirates led 2-0 at the half but settled for a tie in the Orange Empire Conference matchup Friday.

Ian Cone scored a goal in the 14th minute and Juan Meza added another in the 38th for the Pirates (8-6-6, 4-3-5 in conference).

Lincoln Aquatics Shootout

IRVINE — After one day and three dual meets the Anteaters women’s team advanced to the championship pool after posting a 2-1 record.

The women lost to Hawaii, 87-47, while defeating Cal State Northridge, 78-58, and Pepperdine, 77-60.

For the men, Randall Tom set a UC Irvine record , clocking a time of 47.74 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly.

The UC Irvine men lost to Hawaii, 65-55, and UC Davis, 63-59.

But UCI defeated Cal State Northridge, 71-49.
