UCI’S KELLERMAN LAUDED
UC Irvine sophomore Lauren Kellerman, who led the Anteaters women’s volleyball team to a pair of stunning conference road wins against No. 19-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week, was named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Volleyball Update.
Kellerman, who also earned Big West Conference Player of the Week honors, pounded a career-high 28 kills with 13 digs against UCSB on Oct. 27, as UCI recorded its first win at the Thunderdome.
Against Cal Poly on Oct. 28, Kellerman amassed a match-high 22 kills and registered a career-high five block assists. Kellerman also collected 10 digs for her 10th double-double this season.
Kellerman ranks second in the Big West in kill average with 4.0 per game.
HERNANDEZ TOP RUNNER
Elda Hernandez, who competes for the Orange Coast College women’s cross country team, has been named the Orange Empire Conference Runner of the Year following her first-place performance at the OEC Championships Saturday.
Hernandez, who won Saturday’s race in 19 minutes, 29.69 seconds, came to OCC from Newport Harbor High, where she excelled as a sprinter.”The transition from sprinter to distance runner is tough, but Elda has been great at it,” OCC Coach Marco Ochoa said. Hernandez has finished first in all but two races involving runners from two-year schools this season.
Following OCC, Hernandez will most likely attend Vanguard University next year.
PONY BASEBALL SIGN-UPS
The Costa Mesa Pony League will hold sign-ups for the Spring, 2007 season today from 9 a.m. to noon at Costa Mesa High, in front of the main gym.
