District offers online safety tips

The Laguna Beach Unified School District, in partnership with the Laguna Beach Police Department, the Orange County Department of Education, and Educational Technology and Life Corp., has developed an Online Safety Curriculum for students, educators and parents.

The 90-minute presentations, with optional one-hour hands-on sessions, are an introduction to technology: benefits, concerns, proactive strategies for keeping students safe online and a focus on the social networking site, MySpace.com.

Two future sessions are being offered Monday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 4, at 9 a.m. at the Laguna Beach High School library.

Registration is free but seating is limited. Parents and guardians who wish to attend are asked to call (949) 497-7700, ext. 210, to register for their selected session.

The organizations plan to offer similar courses in the future to the general public.

Winning pizza recipes being offered

Three kids shared top honors at the Oct. 7 pizza cookoff at Gina’s Pizza Boat Canyon, 610 N. Coast Highway; their creations can be ordered for the next few months at the location.

Twenty-one Laguna kids aged 4 to 12 years participated in the event; Mary Emma Meyer’s “I Love Olives” pizza, Jarrod Shepherd’s “Green Gremlin” pizza and Tyler Fisher’s “Laguna Veggie” pizza were voted the best.

Local grad follows his dream

Laguna Beach High School class of 2000 graduate Grant Owens has been appointed production coordinator of special markets for the EMI music company in Los Angeles.

Owens graduated from USC in December, 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in the Music Industry, a professional degree granted by the Thornton School of Music.

At Laguna Beach High School, Owens was involved as a singer and instrumentalist, and received 17 scholarships and awards his senior year. He was also honored as Junior Citizen of the Year in the Patriot’s Day Parade.

Art Renewal scholarship winners

The Art Renewal Center recently announced the winners of the 2006 Annual Scholarship Competition. Among the recipients was Laguna College of Art & Design alumna and member of the Master of Fine Art in Painting program Carolin Peters.

Peters graduated with honors, receiving her Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 2006. She is currently enrolled in LCAD’s Master of Fine Art in Painting program, which launched this fall.

The judges were Dr. Vern G. Swanson, director of the Springville Museum of Art, expert and author of the Catalogues Raisonne on Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John William Godward; Stephen Gjertson, ARC Living Master, founding member of the American Society of Classical Realism Guild of Artists; Paul W. McCormack, ARC Living Master, executive director of ARC Programs; and ARC chairman and founder Fred Ross.
