COSTA MESA — Matt Schirmer blasted the ball from the top of the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the net in the 90th minute to break a 1-1 tie in the Orange Empire Conference clash Friday at OCC.
Schirmer’s goal was assisted by Juan Meza, who tied the score in the 55th minute when he took a ball that caromed off the goalie’s chest and directed it in.
OCC, which received three saves from Alex Roberts, improved to 5-4-1, 1-1 in conference.
The Pirates play host to Cypress Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Dustin Daley scored for Santiago Canyon (3-4-2, 1-1) in the fifth minute.

NORTHRIDGE — The Anteaters outshot the Matadors, 12-3, in the second half, but were unable to score in the Big West Conference opener Friday.
Northridge (7-4) had a 3-0 lead at halftime.
UCI (2-7) play host to San Jose in a nonconference match, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Orange Coast def. Cypress
CYPRESS — Kiwi Winkler’s 21 kills led the Pirates to a victory over Cypress, 30-23, 30-23, 35-33, in the Orange Empire Conference opener Friday.
Jacqui Reed added 17 kills for Orange Coast (8-0, 1-0). Chelsea Spadaro had 37 assists and Kissa Kent added 19 digs.
Cal Poly def. UC Irvine
IRVINE — Kristin Kelley’s 19 kills were not enough to prevent a loss, 34-32, 30-26, 21-30, 30-27, to No. 20-ranked Cal Poly in the Anteaters’ Big West Conference opener Friday.
Lauren Kellerman added 17 kills and McCall Miller had 11 for UCI (4-10, 0-1). Taryn Robertson dished out 55 assists and Devon Sutherland had 25 digs.
