DOHENY CAPTURES CROWN

NEWPORT BEACH — Andrew Doheny of Newport Beach won the middle school final at the 18th annual Newport Beach Surfing Championships, a recreational event completed Sunday at the 54th Street break.

Doheny scored 15.5 points, beating second-place Porter Hogan of Laguna Beach by five points.

In other action, Eddie Flores of Newport Beach won the legends division final with 6.75 points.

Newport Beach resident Kaleigh Gilchrist (11.25 points) won the open women’s final, while Newport Harbor High alumnus Joe Alani (13.75 points) won the open men’s final.

Ronny Nelson won the masters division final with 12.0 points, with David Giddings of Newport Beach finishing second (11.5).

Taylor Clark of Encinitas won the elementary school division final with 11.5 points, and Chase Brady of San Clemente (13.75 points) finished first in the high school final.

SEA KINGS SEEKING COACH

The Corona del Mar High boys’ basketball program is looking for a lower-level walk-on coach for the upcoming season.

CDM CAR WASH SLATED

The Corona del Mar High girls’ water polo team is holding a fundraiser car wash Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a gas station on the corner of San Miguel and Ford Road.

Donations are welcome.
