Costa Mesa’s police union, on the night the City Council approved a police pay raise, has decided to endorse Bruce Garlich and Mike Scheafer in November’s council elections.

The endorsement likely deals a blow to Mayor Allan Mansoor, who is running for reelection. Mansoor is an Orange County’s Sheriff’s deputy.

Scheafer expressed his gratitude to the Costa Mesa Police Assn. on Tuesday night.

“It’s an extreme honor to have them endorse me,” Scheafer said. “It’s very huge to me, having a son who’s a police officer.”

Garlich did not offer comment Tuesday night.

Mansoor could not be reached Tuesday night. He was in a council meeting when the endorsements were announced.
