Ex-Sailor earns title
LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and her partner, Kerri Walsh, complete a uniquely successful season on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour Sunday by winning the final of the Lake Tahoe Best of the Beach event.
May-Treanor and Walsh defeated Rachel Wacholder and Jennifer Boss, 21-14, 21-15, in the final to record their seventh straight AVP team tournament crown.
It was also the 13th triumph in 15 team AVP tournaments this season, setting an AVP single-season record.
May-Treanor and Walsh, who have won 30 of 37 AVP team touraments since they teamed up in 2003, swept their four matches in Lake Tahoe to end the season on a 36-match win streak.
May-Treanor and Walsh split $30,000.
In the men’s event, completed Sunday, Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb teamed with Sean Rosenthal to finish fourth.
Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert, who along with partner Stein Metzger were the top seed, shared fifth place with Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer and his teammate, Casey Jennings.
Lambert and Metzger earned the CROCS Cup for being the top men’s team on the AVP Tour in 2006.
Lambert and Metzger won five events and reached the semifinals in all but one event. They also played in nine championship matches.
Gibb and Rosenthal won the season-opening Fort Lauderdale tournament, while Fuerbringer and Jennings won the event held in Seaside Heights, N.J.
