LITTLE LEAGUE:Robinwood repeats

The Robinwood Majors All-Stars coaching staff knew that it had the pitching and defense to make a serious challenge toward the 2006 District All-Star Tournament championship.

What they got as an unexpected bonus was a very productive offense.

Robinwood concluded a dominating run through the district tournament on July 12 by defeating host Seaview, 6-1, to sweep the best-of-three championship series.

A night earlier, Robinwood won the first series game, 7-0.

The tournament was played at LeBard Park, home of Seaview Little League.

In its five tournament games, Robinwood’s offense produced 50 hits.

“The kids just did an awesome job,” Robinwood Manager Scott Wagers said. “We figured our pitching and defense would be our strengths, but we didn’t expect this of our offense. To get 50 hits in five games, well, that was something we really didn’t expect.”

Robinwood won the division for the second straight year and Wagers said the title marked just the fourth time in tournament history that the league has won the district banner.

Robinwood advances to the Section 5 Tournament. It opens play in the double-elimination event at 5 p.m. today at Trabuco Canyon Little League and will play the winner of District 30, either Sunrise North or Sunrise South.

Wagers said that he “probably” will start Dustin Mouridian in today’s Section opener.

The Robinwood Majors All-Stars are Nick Varelas, Dustin Wagers, Cole Bradshaw, Dustin Mouridian, Austin Baker, Travis Sparks, Adam Daymude, Trevor Zeller, Josh Brackemyer, Jonathan Abernatha, Justin Neese, Austin Olivas, Keegan Reeser, Manager Scott Wagers and coaches Doug Reeser and Lee Zeller.

Robinwood 6, Seaview 1

Robinwood, which never trailed in the championship series, took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning before giving up its first run to Seaview.

Cole Bradshaw was in control during a complete-game victory. He struck out 10 and gave up five hits. He also got the Robinwood offense in gear by hitting a two-run home run in the first inning.

Bradshaw went two for four, overall.

Other home runs for Robinwood included one hit by Travis Sparks, a solo shot in the second inning, and a deep, deep blast by Jonathan Abernatha (who went two for two) in the top of the sixth, a rocket that hit a parked car in the street. “Someone from Seaview told me it was the farthest hit home run they’d seen at the field,” Wagers said.

Dustin Wagers also had a big day at the plate, going three for three with a walk, run scored and RBI double in the top of the sixth that capped the game’s scoring.

Robinwood 7, Seaview 0

Robinwood jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings en route to winning the series opener.

Cole Bradshaw gave Robinwood a 1-0 lead with an RBI single and the advantage grew to 4-0 when a double by Adam Daymude drove home three runs.

Bradshaw hit a solo home run in the second inning and went three for three, overall. Daymude went two for three with a run scored and Josh Brackemyer went two for three with a pair of doubles, an RBI and run scored.

Dustin Mouridian also had a single and picked up the piching win. He went the distance and gave up four hits without a run while striking out nine. hbi.20-spmajors-1-CPhotoInfo621T2KAH20060720j2mfdrncCaption: (LA)Seaview’s Max Mayer, left, beats Robinwood’s Dustin Wagers with the tag at home plate during the first inning of Tuesday’s game. hbi.20-spmajors-2-CPhotoInfo621T2KAU20060720j2mfe2ncCredit: KENT TREPTOW / INDEPENDENT Caption: (LA)Robinwood’s Adam Daymude hits a two-run double during the first inning of Tuesday’s game against Seaview.
