Yacht races setting sail

The Balboa Yacht Club’s 40th Governor’s Cup junior sailing regatta begins today.

The 12-team field includes the Balboa Yacht Club and the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

The Balboa Yacht Club team consists of Casey Schilling, Christian Emsiek and Wade Buzton. This is the third year these three will compete in the Governor’s cup, which pits three-person teams in a series of round-robin match races in identical yachts over five days.

The Newport Harbor Yacht Club team is Mac Mace, Andrew Mason and Christopher Segerblom. The threesome won the right to compete in the Governor’s cup by winning their club’s sail-off.

Yacht clubs from Maryland, New Orleans, England, Australia, and New Zealand round out the field.

Teams compete in lightweight 21-foot sloops, designed by Balboa Yacht Club member Alan Andrews.
