Lambert earns win

ATLANTA ? Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert teamed with Stein Metzger to win the AVP Atlanta Open beach volleyball tournament on Sunday.

Lambert and Metzger, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 6-seeded Dax Holdren and Sean Scott, 21-17, 18-21, 15-13, in the final.

Lambert and Metzger are the only men’s team to finish in the top four of all eight AVP events this season.

In the women’s final, top-seeded Misty May-Treaner, a Newport Harbor High product, and partner Kerri Walsh were upset by No. 2-seeded Elaine Youngs and Rachel Wacholder, 21-16, 19-21, 15-12.

It was the fifth time the two teams have met in the final this season.

Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer and his partner, Casey Jennings, lost to Lambert-Metzger, 21-16, 21-13, in the semifinals.

The tour moves next week to Birmingham, Ala.
