Bronco A captures crown
Starting pitcher Matt Carpenter did not allow an earned run in three innings, then led off the fourth with the first of back-to-back homers to lead the Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. Bronco A All-Stars to a 10-4 victory over Dana Point in the championship game of the Dana Point Summer Classic on Saturday at Del Obispo Park.
Carpenter’s leadoff dinger was followed by an A.J. Swies homer to almost the identical spot in right-center field, Bronco A Manager Tony Swies said.
The back-to-back bombs, which broke a 1-1 tie, sparked a seven-run outburst from which Dana Point could not recover.
Newport Harbor added onto the lead in the top of the sixth inning, when Christian Ochoa homered.
Jake Stowell went three for three to add to Newport Harbor’s 14-hit attack and A.J. Swies fanned four of the final six hitters he faced to close out the win on the mound.
It was the second tournament title of the postseason for Newport Harbor (9-1), which suffered its only loss ? 10-6 against Dana Point in a meaningless pool-play contest Wednesday.
Dana Point had not lost until Saturday, Tony Swies said.
A.J. Swies has four homers this postseason, while Carpenter and Nick McCann have three, Tony Swies said. Brett Parker has a pair of home runs for Newport Harbor, which begins District Tournament play Thursday at 5 p.m. against Garden Grove Red at West Haven Park in Garden Grove.
