UCI’s Gorgen lauded
UC Irvine pitcher Scott Gorgen has been named second-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America.
Gorgen, the Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year, was named to the Freshman All-American team selected previously by Collegiate Baseball.
Gorgen, arguably the Anteaters most consistent weekend starter all season, went 7-5 with a 2.54 earned-run average in his debut collegiate season in 2006.
The right-hander was second on the team with 87 strikeouts in 110 innings and he limited teams to a .234 bating average.
Gorgen earned wins in his first two collegiate starts and two of his starts resulted in combined shutouts for the team.
UCI made its second NCAA Regional appearance in three years and finished the season 36-24.
The Anteaters’ third-place finish in the Big West was their best conference finish in five years. They were 11-10 in conference games.
