Police arrest man after bar brawl
A 23-year-old Costa Mesa man was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and battery in connection with a disturbance outside a bar, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
Adam Ebbeo Gerken was taken into custody at approximately 12:30 a.m. after police responded to a disturbance call at the Detroit Bar, 843 W. 19th St. Assault with a deadly weapon carries a felony charge, and the battery was labeled a misdemeanor, according to police.
Costa Mesa Police contacted Sunday did not have more details about the fracas. But Detroit Bar representative Chris Fahey said the disturbance started after Gerken tried to enter the club but was turned away because he did not have an ID.
After that he allegedly mooned patrons on the patio and later used a skateboard to take a swing at a security guard, Fahey said. The guard, who is pressing charges, subdued him with pepper spray until police arrived, Fahey said.
The scuffle was a rare one as the bar usually averages a disturbance like this about once a year, Fahey said.
