Locals move on at Roxy, Quiksilver

Eleven area tennis players advanced in championship bracket play at the Quiksilver and Roxy Junior Championships on Saturday at a number of sites around Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine and Fountain Valley.

The two tournaments feature some of the top junior tennis players on the West Coast, and continue through Monday.

In the Quiksilver tournament, Costa Mesa’s Christopher Freeman won two matches to reach the round of 32 in boys’ 16 singles. Freeman swept Spencer Aguiar, 6-3, 7-5, and edged Moushag Hovhannisyan in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 10-8.

Also advancing in the 16s were Corona del Mar High’s Ryan Caughren (defeating Chad Biele, 6-1, 6-1) and Costa Mesa’s Charlie Alvarado (sweeping Jake Fellow, 6-1, 6-0). Corona del Mar’s Chris Damion lost in three sets to Erich Koenig, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6, in the round of 64.

In the boys’ 12 singles division, top-seeded Joseph DiGiulio of Newport Beach blanked Andrew You, 6-0, 6-0, in his lone match of the day. Newport Beach’s Christian Ball topped Gavin Lynch, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, before losing to Stefan Menichella, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 64.

At the Roxy tournament, Newport Beach’s Jillian Braverman had the longest day, defeating Emily Aston, 6-3, 6-0, and ousting Leslie Bullock, 6-0, 6-0, in the girls’ 18 singles division.

Also advancing in the girls’ 18 singles were Newport Beach’s Alexandra Welliver (6-4, 6-7, 10-6 over Brooke Pletcher) and Corona del Mar’s Jill Damion (topping Jennifer Heumann, 6-1, 6-0). Corona del Mar High’s Miranda Young defeated Angelique Corpuz, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, before losing to Rebecca Marino, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 64.

Newport Beach’s Ali Walters had a bye and then swept Anna Yang, 7-5, 6-1, in the girls’ 16 singles division.

Newport Beach’s Hailey Hogan (6-1, 6-7, 10-7 over Taylor Brandt) and Melissa Matsuoka (6-1, 6-0 against Rachel Pan), and Newport Coast’s Jungyeun Lee (6-3, 6-76, 10-8 against Riko Shimizu) moved on in the girls’ 14 singles bracket.
