The 49th annual city of Laguna Beach Tennis Tournament recently concluded at Alta Laguna Park with a singles champion also hoisting a trophy in doubles action. .

John Rushing won the men’s open singles round-robin event by defeating every player entered in the event. Darrin Forbes earned the division’s finalist trophy, as his only loss was to Rushing.

Rushing also teamed with Mark Smith to win the men’s open doubles title. The duo finished ahead of the team of Nate Heussenstamm and Tom Brennan.

Manjeet Randhawa defeated Bill Hoffman to win the 4.5 men’s singles final. Chris Carpenter went undefeated in the men’s 4.0 singles, losing only one set en route to the title. Robert Seaman, whose only setback in the competition was to Carpenter, took the finalist trophy.

In the 3.5 men’s singles event, Jon Cobain went undefeated to capture first place, with Miguel Amador placing second. Laura Hillstrom defeated Sue Pratto to win the 3.5 women’s event. Nick Hernandez and Jim Patricola teamed to win the men’s 4.5 doubles, beating the father-son combination of Carl and Richard Selin in the final.

The mixed doubles events were hotly contested. Amy Cichowski and Robert Seaman won the 4.0 mixed doubles with a record of 4-0. The team of Iris and Glenn Rogers finished second to Cichowski and Seaman with a 3-1 record.

Holly Morrell and Jim Cassidy won the 3.5 mixed round robin with a 3-0 record, and Moanna Bartholomew and Miguel Amador won the finalist trophy on a countdown.

The tournament also featured a “youth/experience” event which teamed junior players with adult competitors, often a parent. Eight pairs were divided into two groups for the Davis Cup section, and also for the Olympics section. The winner of each group within a section played for the right to hold up the winner’s trophy in their section.

The team of Peter Salomon and Paul Salomon defeated Laura Villa and Brett Peterson, 6-0, to win the Davis Cup youth/experience trophy, and the team of Richard Azera and Alison Azera defeated Ray Tang and Aaron Tang, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to win the Olympics youth/experience trophy.
