Sage survives, advances

NEWPORT BEACH ? Sage Hill School advanced two singles players and three doubles teams on the first day of the Academy League boys’ tennis finals at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Top-seeded Martin Park and No. 3 seed Robert Wee won two matches Friday to reach the semifinals. In doubles, No. 3 seeded Michael Garrison and Troy Astorino, and the pairs of Grant Gerdau-Kevin Wang and Tyler Ross-Conrad Whitaker also moved on to the quarterfinals.

Park will face No. 4 seed Evan Storm of Fairmont and Wee will take on No. 2 seed Michael Schnieder of St. Margaret’s. In doubles, Garrison and Astorino will face Capistrano Valley Christian’s Nate Ellis and Alex Kronenberg; Gerdau and Wang will meet Whitney’s Mike Kuravi and Jim Lee; and Ross and Whitaker will take on Oxford’s Min Lee and Eric An.

The singles semifinals will be at 1 p.m., with the doubles quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m.
