Breakers closing in on qualifying marks
During the 2006 swim season, the Laguna Beach High girls’ squad has found success as all three of its relay teams, and three individual swimmers, have sprinted their way to automatic qualifying berths in the CIF-Southern Section prelims meet on May 12.
Wednesday, members of the Laguna boys’ team contended for qualifying times in a Pacific Coast League meet at Tesoro.
Cameron Brinkman, looking to qualify in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, just missed qualifying ? by under two seconds ? in the 100-free. The qualifying time for Division II is 50.50. Brinkman’s time Wednesday was 51.78.
The boys’ 200-free relay team of Brad Fair, Nathan McConnell, Pierre Masson and Brinkman, also just missed qualifying, coming up short by a mere eight-tenths of a second.
The Breakers have one more attempt at qualifying for CIF when the Pacific Coast League finals get underway. The boys’ prelims are Tuesday, and the girls follow Wednesday, both beginning at 2 p.m. at Beckman High.
League finals will begin at 3 p.m. on May 5, also at Beckman.
