Sailors stopped in finals

SANTA BARBARA ? Newport Harbor High’s boys’ volleyball team advanced to the finals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, finishing second on Saturday.

The Sailors (19-7), seeded No. 2 in the tournament, defeated No. 3 seed Santa Barbara 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, in the semifinals. They then lost to No. 1 seed Valencia in the championship, 25-23, 25-19, 25-15.

Brett Auer, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 14 kills against Santa Barbara and 11 against Valencia. Weston Dunlap added 14 kills against Santa Barbara. Kyle Caldwell had 13 kills and seven digs against Santa Barbara.

Ted Slater, Newport Harbor’s other all-tournament selection, had 48 assists in the Santa Barbara match and 36 assists in the final.
