Games washed away
Rain caused the cancellations of the majority of Newport-Mesa sporting events on Tuesday, leaving coaches and athletic directors scrambling to schedule make-up dates.
All area baseball games were rained out, including UC Irvine’s game at UCLA, which was rescheduled for May 23.
Orange Coast College’s baseball game at Irvine Valley was postponed and, weather permitting, will be played today at 2 p.m.
The Corona del Mar High baseball team’s home game against Laguna Beach was canceled. Corona del Mar Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said he was trying to reschedule the game for either Friday or Monday.
Costa Mesa’s game against Ocean View and Sage Hill’s game against Whitney were also postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.
The Estancia High boys’ golf team’s Golden West League match against Orange at Mesa Verde Country Club was rescheduled for April 19 at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.
Corona del Mar’s golf match against Laguna Beach and Newport Harbor’s match against Woodbridge were also postponed.
The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate golf tournament, which the UC Irvine men’s golf team was scheduled to participate in, was canceled Monday.
The Vanguard University softball team’s doubleheader at Azusa Pacific was postponed and rescheduled for April 27 at 3 p.m.
The Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Sage Hill softball teams also had their games postponed. The Sailors’ Sea View League home game against Foothill has been rescheduled for April 22.
In swimming, barring lightning, Estancia plans to go ahead with its long-awaited home meet against Westminster today at 3:15 p.m. Estancia’s pool has been undergoing renovations all year. The team will be competing at home for the first time this season.
Tuesday, Sage Hill had its Academy League swim meet against rival St. Margaret’s at Corona del Mar High postponed to a later date.
The Vanguard University men’s and women’s tennis teams had their Golden State Athletic Conference home matches against Point Loma Nazarene postponed. Both matches have been rescheduled for Monday.
Corona del Mar’s Pacific Coast League boys’ tennis match against Northwood was postponed and is scheduled to be played May 2 at Corona del Mar High.
Newport Harbor, Costa Mesa and Sage Hill also had boys’ tennis matches postponed.
The outlook isn’t great for today’s athletic contests either. The forecast is for a 70% chance of showers, with a slight chance of thunderstorms.
