Lions’ comeback too late

COSTA MESA ? A seventh-inning rally came one run short as the Vanguard University softball team lost to Hope International, 5-4, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday.

Rachel Bomgren hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to spark the rally for Vanguard (17-18, 2-8 in conference). Lindsay Emmel, who took the loss, added an RBI double in the inning, but Hope International’s Amanda Mesa coaxed Krista Mahan into a game-ending pop-up with the potential tying run at second base.

Friday’s game was a makeup from Tuesday, when the second game of the conference doubleheader was rained out.
