Breakers swim to records in rainy meet

Records fell by the poolside Tuesday when Laguna Beach High hosted University in a rain-drenched Pacific Coast League swim meet.

Four records were set by the Laguna girls’ team, which, like the boys’ team, fell to University in a meet held in pouring rain.

Two of those records were set by freshman Chelsea Wild who established new marks in the girls’ 100-yard butterfly and 500-freestyle.

Wild swam a 1:03.00 in the 100-butterfly to break the old school mark and earn a CIF consideration time for the May 12 Southern Section prelim meet at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Wild also smashed the school record in the 500-free with a swim of 5:07.67, shaving nearly 17 seconds off the old mark (5:23.98).

“Chelsea may be small in stature, but she’s dynamite in the water,” Laguna Coach Rick McKee said.

Two Laguna girls’ relay teams also set school records Tuesday and in the process, hit CIF qualifying times.

The medley relay team composed of freshman Annika Dries, sophomore Andrea Regal, Wild and junior Erin Reid, set a new record with a 1:58.53. The foursome broke the old school mark of 2:03.00, set it 1992.

The 1992 time was the longest-standing record on the school record board, McKee said.

The 200-yard relay team of Dries, freshman Taylor Dodson, junior Breanna Duplisea and Reid, set a new school record with a time of 1:44.87. The old mark was 1:46.16.
