Hewko named Pacific Coast League MVP
Camille Hewko heads a list of six Corona del Mar High girls’ water polo players who were honored by the Pacific Coast League after the Sea Kings’ run to the CIF Southern Section Division II title.
Hewko, Corona del Mar’s two-meter star, was named the Pacific Coast League’s Most Valuable Player and teammate Tumua Anae was selected as the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year.
The USC-bound Anae emerged as one of the best goalies in Orange County in her first year starting on varsity. Hewko, who has signed with Cal, had 60 goals and 30 assists this season.
Senior Ashley Chandler, regarded as one of the best two-meter defenders in Orange County, and junior sharpshooter Katie Indvik were All-Pacific Coast League first-team picks. Chandler has signed a national letter of intent with UC Davis.
Juniors Cari Levine and Sarah Hutchison were second-team selections for the Sea Kings, who won their fifth consecutive CIF Southern Section title by defeating Villa Park, 11-4, in the Division II final. It was their fourth consecutive Division II crown.
Corona del Mar went 28-3 this season, going undefeated in the Pacific Coast League with a 5-0 record. The Sea Kings won their final seven matches and 21 of their last 22 games. Their only losses came to Division I champion Newport Harbor in the finals of the Holiday Cup, and Division I semifinalist Foothill in a nonleague match and in finals of the Southern California Championships.
During the playoffs, Corona del Mar outscored its opponents, 57-13.
League runner-up Laguna Beach had three first-team selections and two second-team picks. Northwood, which finished third, had two players picked for the first team and two for the second team.
University and Tesoro each had one first-team and one second-team selection and Beckman had one second-team player.
