A “W” FOR DUBOIS, TIPTON

Newport Beach’s Don DuBois and Corona del Mar’s Will Tipton escaped with victory at the Southern California Golf Assn. Foursomes Championship on Tuesday at the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook.

DuBois and Tipton finished with a four-over-par 148, winning by one shot over Glendale’s Keith Kinsel and Walnut’s Patrick Carrigan.

After sharing the first-round lead with Mark Scheibach of Bermuda Dunes and Eric Schwarz of Indio, DuBois and Tipton birdied two of the first four holes and were solidly in the lead heading to the ninth hole on Tuesday. The pair from Big Canyon Country Club then bogeyed four of the next six holes, including a double at No. 12, before parring the final four holes.

Kinsel and Carrigan had a chance to steal away the title, but bogeyed No. 18 to finish a shot back.

Under the tournament format, players teed off on alternating holes, switching hole assignments for the second round.

Corona del Mar’s Brian Lindley and partner Robert Summers tied for 12th place at 10-over. Newport Beach’s Warren Caves and partner Michael Carpenter, both of Big Canyon Country Club, tied for 16th place with a 12-over-par 154, as did Newport Beach’s Peter Daley and partner Preston Davis.

KNAPP HAS A KNACK

TeWinkle Middle School student Jacob Knapp finished second in the boys’ 11-and-under division at the California Oaks Spring junior tournament Sunday at California Oaks Golf Club in Murrieta.

Knapp, the younger brother of Estancia High freshman golfer Ryan Knapp, fired a three-over-par 35 over nine holes to finish one stroke behind Cypress’ Brenton Hirao. It was the sixth-grader’s first tournament on the Southern California PGA’s junior tour this season.

Eli Gomez, another Costa Mesa resident, tied for 19th at 12-over-par.
