Lions not too late for sweep
COSTA MESA ? The Vanguard University softball swept a nonconference doubleheader in dramatic fashion, defeating Dominican College, 7-6 in eight innings, and 2-1.
In the opener, Vanguard (11-7) scored four times in the fifth inning to tie the score, keyed by Lindsay Emmel’s two-run double. The Lions won it in the eighth when Jade Christensen scored from second base on a fielding error by the Dominican first baseman.
Emmel had four hits and four RBI in the opener.
In the second game, Dominican had the tying run at second base with two outs, but Lions pitcher Krista Mahan coaxed a pop-up to the catcher to end the game.
Rachel Bomgren and Melissa Benson each had two hits and an RBI in the second game.
