UCI rallies to sweep Aztecs
SAN DIEGO ? The UC Irvine baseball team scored three in the ninth inning to tie and two in the 10th to defeat San Diego State, 8-6, Sunday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Anteaters (9-5) swept the three-game nonconference series and have won five straight.
Cody Cipriano capped the three-run ninth with a two-out RBI single to knot the score.
In the 10th, Josh Tavelli singled in the go-ahead run with two outs, then scored on Gary Dudrey’s triple.
Junior All-American closer Blair Erickson pitched two scoreless relief innings to earn his first victory of the season.
Tavelli was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs, while UCI teammate Bryan Petersen went 3 for 4 with two doubles and one RBI.
Dudrey was 3 for 5 and scored a run.
Senior Jaime Martinez hit his second home run of the season in the third to give UCI starter Glenn Swanson a 3-1 lead.
The Aztecs (4-10) pulled even against Swanson, then touched Dylan Axelrod for two runs to take the lead in the sixth.
