Anteaters go inside and outside for track meets
SEATTLE ? Freshman Lauren Collins took fifth in the women’s high jump to lead UC Irvine’s contingent at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor track and field championships, which concluded Saturday at the University of Washington.
The Anteaters, who sent a small squad to Washington, placed 10th in the 11-team women’s field. They did not send a men’s team.
Other members of UCI’s track team competed in the Carl Rossi Relays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.
Collins, who had the fifth-best mark in the conference entering the meet, recorded a mark of 5-5 1/4 in the high jump. Teammate Danielle St. John also jumped 5-5 1/4 , tying for eighth place.
Collins also competed in the pentathlon, placing 15th overall with 3,456 points. UCI’s Orlisha Henlon finished 14th in the event with 3,466 points.
UCI placed seventh in the women’s distance medley relay as the team of Amber Steen, Corica Rodgers, Samantha Costantini and Marie Nguyen finished with a time of 11:52.60.
At the Carl Rossi Relays, Christina Sando and Michael Beerer each finished second in their respective events for the Anteaters.
Sando was second in the women’s high jump with a leap of 5-4, while Beerer was runner-up in the men’s hammer throw with a toss of 204 feet. The Anteaters also finished second in the men’s 4x100-meter relay with a time of 41.55 seconds.
UCI also took third in the women’s 4x1,600-meter relay with a time of 21:34.52, fifth in the men’s 4x400 relay (3:15.38) and men’s 4x1,600 relay (17:42.19).
Mark Ilarina and Oliver Plastner finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the men’s 100. Ilarina finished in 11.10 seconds, followed by Plastner in 11.12.
Other top finishers for the Anteaters included Brian Moon (fourth in the men’s shot put with a toss of 50-10) and Laura Olvera (fifth in the women’s 3,000 with a time of 10:16.73).
With the indoor season complete for the Anteaters, their next meet will be at home Saturday as they play host to the All-Cal Cup.
