Cement truck hits cyclist in Newport
A Santa Ana bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Friday after he was hit by a cement mixer at a Newport Beach intersection.
The victim, 25-year-old Elias Mena Bautista, was found in the road with head and torso injuries at the intersection of Jamboree Road and Bayview Way shortly after 10:15 a.m. Friday, Newport Beach police said. He was taken for Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment in grave condition.
However, a spokeswoman for Western Medical Center said she did not have any record of Bautista being at the hospital. No further information about Bautista could be learned late Friday.
Police have not completed their investigation, but Sgt. Bill Hartford said evidence obtained Friday appears to indicate that Bautista ran a red light on Jamboree Road before he was struck by the Peterbilt cement mixer.
Any witnesses are asked to call traffic investigator Gerry White at (949) 644-3748.
