Winter sports season commences today

The Costa Mesa High boys’ soccer team plays host to Fountain Valley at 3:15 p.m., while Corona del Mar’s boys’ soccer squad plays host to Huntington Beach at 3 p.m.
The Sage Hill girls’ water polo team opens play in the Magnolia Tournament at Magnolia High at 3 p.m.
CdM’s boys’ soccer team reached the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs last season before bowing out to Chaparral, 2-1, in sudden-death overtime.
The Sea Kings, who finished 12-7-3, 7-2-1 in the Pacific Coast League for second last season, return six starters this year.
The Costa Mesa boys’ soccer squad went 3-19, 1-11 in the Golden West League last season for last. The Mustangs return eight players this year.
The Lightning girls’ water polo team finished 10-11 last year and just missed qualifying for the CIF Southern Section postseason.
