Newport Harbor reaches S&R; semifinals
The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team won its first two games
in the S & R Sport Southern California tournament Friday at Irvine
High.
Newport defeated Acalanes, 19-4, in the morning, then came back in
the afternoon to beat Clovis West, 9-3.
Against Acalanes, Brett Auer led the way with six goals. Parker
Gregory, Telford Cottam and Jared Yocum added three goals each and
Evan McLain made 10 saves in goal.
Against Clovis West, Cottam led the charge with a game-high five
goals and Evan McLain blocked 14 shots.
The Sailors (11-1) are playing without Clay Jorth, who is
competing for Team USA in the Junior World Championships near Buenos
Aires, Argentina, until Oct. 15, at the Pan-American Stadium in Del
Mar Plata.
However, the Sailors will play in the semifinals today at 3 p.m.
at Irvine High. The finals are slated for 8 p.m.

Sea Kings split two
* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team played
two games Friday at Irvine High. The Sea Kings lost the first game,
12-7, to Clovis West but came back to beat Alcalanes, 12-11, in the
second game to increase their record to 7-7.
Kyle Hersh led the offense with three goals against Clovis West
while Tom Money and Jacob Murphy each had two.
Goalie Jamie Kline had four saves and Phillip Di Giacomo helped
out with one.
In the second game Murphy put in four more goals while Hersh and
Ryan Hultman each had three. Money added two goals to help defeat the
Alcalanes.
Estancia tames Lions
* CROSS COUNTRY: Estancia High’s boys cross country teams beat
Westminster in a Golden West League dual meet Thursday at
Westminster, 15-50. Ernesto Castaneda and Hector Gomez tied for the
lead at 19:04. The next six Eagle runners were CJ Buckman (19:05),
Fernando Orozco (19:05), Josh Garcia (19:06), Enrique Vivar (19:08)
and Willi Rodriguez (19:09)
The Estancia girls team defeated Westminster, 15-43. The Eagles
placed the top five runners against the Lions. Sydney Barloon
finished first with 22:07. Paula Negrete (22:38), Magali Onofre
(22:57) and Cindi Ramirez (24:11) all finished ahead of the first
Lion runner.
In Friday’s Edison invitational at Fairview Park, Estancia boys
took second place with 67 points.
Ernesto Castaneda had a second-place finish in the three-mile run
with a time of 15:49. C.J. Buchman helped out by placing fourth with
a time of 16:07. Hector Gomez took 14th place and Enrique Vivar
finished in 23rd while Fernando Orozco took 24th. Jose Garcia and
Willi Rodriguez also participated in the event.
The Estancia girls finished fifth with 167 points Friday as Sydney
Barloon was sixth in 19:11. Paula Negrede was 27th place. Magali
Onofre came in 35th place while Karina Rios and Sindi Ramirez
contributed by placing 53rd and 54th.
Pirates move to semis
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team
picked up two victories Friday to reach the semifinals of the Citrus
College tournament. In the first game, Orange Coast defeated Citrus,
15-7. Nikola Popovic led the way with seven goals and Ivan Bjelica
added three goals.
In the second game, No. 8-ranked Orange Coast upset No. 2-ranked
Long Beach, 10-9. Popovic had four goals and Nick Sullivan added
three goals. Orange Coast plays in the semifinals today against Mt.
SAC at 10 a.m. The finals are slated for 3:30 p.m. at Citrus College.
OCC still undefeated
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team
swept Fullerton, 30-19, 30-16, 30-26, Friday in an Orange Empire
Conference match.
Kiwi Wrinkler led the offense with 22 kills and Brittney Ray
helped out with 17. Ashlee Moon had four service aces and setter
Caitlin Parker finished with 22 assists to help defeat Fullerton
(4-6, 1-2 in conferce).
The Pirates (9-0, 3-0 in conference) will play again Wednesday at
Saddleback.
CdM sweeps Calvary
* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar girls tennis team swept Calvary
Chapel, 18-0, in Pacific Coast League action Friday. CdM is 5-0 in
league play and has increased its overall record to 9-2.

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team swept
visiting Oxford Academy, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20, Friday in an Academy
League contest.
Cat Dailey tallied 18 kills, Vista Murphy slammed 12 kills and
Haywood Wright added 11 kills for Sage, ranked No. 2 in CIF IV-A.
UCI falls to UCSB
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team (3-9-1, 0-2) lost to
UC Santa Barbara Friday in Big West Conference play at Anteater
Stadium.
Freshman goalie Rosie Aguilera had four saves for the Anteaters.
Estancia downed
* WATER POLO: The Estancia High boys water polo team lost a
nonleague game, 13-8 to La Quinta Friday. The Eagles will play again
Monday in the Estancia varsity tournament at Costa Mesa High.
Orange Coast edged
* SOCCER: In an Orange Empire Conference game against Golden West,
the Orange Coast College men’s soccer team lost, 2-1. David Barnett scored the Pirates only goal in the 87th minute assisted by Adam Uhl.
Goalie Trent Painter had two saves against the Rustlers (7-2-2, 3-1-0
in conference). OCC dropped to 7-4-3, 2-2-0 in conference.
