Girls’ water polo wins two
The Laguna Beach Age Group Water Polo girls’ 12-and-under team picked
up a pair of weekend victories to run their overall record to 3-0.
On Saturday, Laguna sprinted past visiting Newport, 9-1, and came
back on Sunday to drill SoCal, 18-0.
Laguna 9, Newport 1
Kelsey Thornton, a newcomer to the team, scored in the first
period to get the Laguna offense off and running.
Jesse Holechek scored twice and Yoshi Andersen once in the second
quarter to move Laguna out to a 4-0 halftime lead.
Laguna’s defense was outstanding in the game, as Jessica Shusko
had three steals and goalie Edie Manetta had four saves in the first
half of play.
Scoring second-half goals for Laguna were Thornton, Shusko, Melina
Masson and Candyce Shroeder, who scored twice.
Shroeder also had four assists during the contest.
Laguna 18, SoCal 0
The game, played at Foothill High, was over after the first
quarter.
Jessica Shusko scored three goals, Yoshi Andersen scored twice and
Melina Masson and Jesse Holechek scored once during a first
quarter-scoring onslaught.
Shusko finished with five goals, Kelsey Thornton scored three,
Holechek and Edie Manetta each scored twice and Kaiitlyn Waidley and
Candyce Schroder each scored once.
Riley Duncan led Laguna in the assists department.

Girls’
14-and-Under Division
Newport 5, Laguna 3
Laguna rallied to tie the score at the half, but Newport scored
the final two goals of the match to pull out the win.
Lexy Ross scored twice and Yoshi Andersen scored once in the first
half, allowing Laguna to wipe out an early 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-3
tie at the break.
Laguna 11, SoCal 11
In an eight-period match, the teams fought to a deadlock.
Laguna trailed, 9-5, after five periods but outscored SoCal 4-0 in
the sixth period to pull into a tie.
The last of those four goals was scored by Edie Manetta, whose
shot from just beyond mid-pool found the net as time expired in the
period to make it a 9-9 game.
Riley Duncan led Laguna in scoring with three goals. Lauren
Hampton finished with two goals. Her second -- which came off a pass
from Kacki Brown in the eighth period -- tied the score at 11.
Brown, Jessica Shusko, Yoshi Andersen, Kelsey Thornton and Jesse
Holechek each scored once.
Boys’
14-and-Under Division
Newport 14, Laguna 4
Robert Chew, Robbie Quellmalz, Derek Knott and Nolan McConnell
scored goals for host Laguna.
SoCal A 16, Laguna 3
In the first match of a doubleheader between the two programs,
visiting Laguna received goals from Zach Riegler, Robert Chew and
Nolan McConnell.
SoCal B 7, Laguna 5
Spencer Dodson scored two goals to lead Laguna in the defeat.
Nolan McConnell, Derek Knott and Robbie Quellmalz each scored once
for Laguna, and goalie Hunter French made three stops and had a steal
in the first quarter of play.
