Freshman forward Joel Walker netted his first career hat trick to
give the host Orange Coast College men’s soccer team a 4-1
nonconference win against Rio Hondo Thursday afternoon. Coast
improves to 1-0-1.
Anteaters win in 4
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Amanda Vazquez slammed a match-high 14 kills
and the UC Irvine women’s volleyball team defeated visiting
University of Missouri-Kansas City, 30-13, 30-18, 26-30, 30-19,
Thursday at Crawford Court.
Whitney Pavlik, a senior, added 10 kills while junior Trisha White
and sophomore Kristin Kelley had eight kills apiece for the Anteaters
(3-1).
Glatch’s Open run ends
* TENNIS: Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch, 15, bowed out of the women’s singles draw at the U.S. Open with a 6-2, 6-0
second-round loss to 17th-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and
Montenegro Thursday at Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
In women’s doubles, Glatch and Vania King lost to Daniela
Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama, the fifth-seeded duo, 7-5, 6-0, in the
first round.
Locals spark USA
* WATER POLO: Former Corona del Mar High standout Thomas Pearson
and Newport Harbor High senior Clay Jorth each scored one goal for
the United States men’s junior national water polo team, which opened
the International Six Nations tournament with a 16-6 loss to Italy
Thursday in Cosenza, Italy.
Italy built a 9-1 halftime lead and converted eight of 11
six-on-five chances. The U.S. faces Greece today.
