Here are some items the planning commission will consider Monday.

TRASH BIN

SCREENING

One of the first concrete recommendations for upgrades to the

city’s Westside would require that all trash bins in that part of the

city have lids and be screened from view. The planning commission

will consider the proposal, which would permit property owners to add

enclosures or other screening for trash bins even if it means losing

parking spaces or landscaping.

The trash bin screening plan is one of a number of ideas the City

Council approved as ways to revitalize the city’s Westside. Other

initiatives include zoning to promote residential development such as

single-family homes and artist lofts.

WHAT TO EXPECT

With city officials adamant about improving the Westside, the

commission is likely to send the trash bin recommendation on to the

council, which also must approve it to make it official.

CHURCH ZONING

PROPOSAL

Churches could be established in some commercial zones under one

of several suggested changes to the city’s zoning code. Except with a

special permit, they’re now allowed only on properties zoned for

institutional and recreational uses.

The proposed change would allow churches in certain commercial

zones if they are at least 200 feet from residential zones.

This is one of several possible zoning code changes, which are

being considered by the commission as a package. Other changes are

prohibiting visible chain-link fences on nonresidential properties,

allowing some retail sales on industrial properties, and giving the

planning commission authority over the master planning review

process.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Planning staff members recommend that the commission send the

changes to the council for final approval.
