Navy Seaman Ryan L. Powers, son of Charlotte Soverns of Crestline,

Calif., and Gary J. Powers of Costa Mesa, recently completed U.S.

Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Powers completed a variety of

training exercises, which included practical instruction on naval

customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and

shipboard and aircraft safety.

*Carla Martinez of La Habra is the new coordinator of Orange Coast

College’s Student Leadership Program. A former employee of UC Irvine

and Cal State Fullerton, she has extensive experience in higher

education.

Martinez will be teaching leadership studies classes this year and

will also be a student government advisor.

David Holden of Newport Beach received a bachelor’s degree in

music from Berklee College of Music in Boston during the school’s

2005 commencement ceremony.
