Driver arrested for slamming into cafe

Newport Beach police responded to a call at 3:40 p.m. Monday at

Cappy’s Cafe at 5930 W. Coast Hwy.

According to Lt. Jim Kaminski, 18-year-old Carissa Murphy of

Huntington Beach was driving a 1987 Ford four-door at 20 to 30 mph,

heading westbound on West Coast Highway, when she came upon traffic

that was backing up. Murphy swerved right in order to avoid hitting

the backup, and drove into a brick wall of the restaurant, causing

moderate damage to the wall. No one was injured at the restaurant,

which was closed at the time of the incident.

Kaminski said roadside tests revealed the driver’s blood-alcohol

level was twice the legal limit.

Kaminski said Murphy, who was not injured in the crash, was

arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
