Locals conclude surfing contest

Local surfers Ford Archbold and Allan Kincade ran into stiff
competition at the Surfing America USA championships Wednesday near
the Huntington Beach Pier.
The competition, however, wasn’t solely opposing surfers.
Mother Nature failed to provide Costa Mesa’s Kincade, 16, the
right waves at the right time during his third round in the boys
under-18 division, and he was bumped to a consolation round later in
the day.
He placed fourth in his consolation heat to conclude his
competition in the event.
Kincade, who will be a senior at Huntington Beach High in the
fall, scored 3.50 points in his morning heat to finish fourth, and
tallied 7.25 points in his afternoon heat.
“Some people like it how it was, but I like clean, smooth bases,”
he said. “I just didn’t get the good ones.”
Ford Archbold, 14, of Newport Beach, finished third in his heat in
the opening round of the boys under-14 division to conclude his
competition in the event.
“I was hoping to do better, but I don’t care that much,” said
Archbold, a freshman at Newport Harbor in the fall.
