Surfing America event Monday The top amateur...

Surfing America event Monday

The top amateur surfers from around the nation will be in

Huntington Beach from June 27 to July 2 to compete for a title and

the chance to represent the United States as part of the 2005 USA

Surf Team during the Surfing America USA Championships competition.

The contest -- hosted by Surfing America, the national governing

body for the sport of surfing in the U.S., and presented by the Surf

Industry Manufacturers Assn. -- will draw 360 of the best amateur

athletes in America from five regional member organizations: Eastern

Surfing Assn., Hawaii Amateur Surfing Assn., National Scholastic

Surfing Assn., Texas Gulf Surfing Assn. and Western Surfing Assn.

Athletes will compete in nine categories: open men’s, open

women’s, boys under-18, girls under-18, boys under-16, girls

under-16, boys under-14, open longboard and open body board.

Up for grabs for the athletes are championships and one of 36

spots on the USA Surf Team that will represent the U.S. at the

International Surfing Assn. World Junior Championships hosted by

Surfing America in Huntington Beach in October.

Golden West water polo session set

Golden West Water Polo Club, a year-round competitive water polo

team, is running its summer session now through Aug. 21.

The club is open to youth ages 7-14 and athletes must be able to

swim 25 yards.

The third session will run from Aug. 1-Aug. 21, from 5-7 p.m.

every Tuesday and Thursday at Golden West College.

Summer hoops camp underway

The annual summer Youth Basketball Camp at Marina High got

underway Monday and will run through July 14 at the school gymnasium.

The camp is open daily from 8:30-10 a.m. and youth entering grades

3-8 in the 2005-06 school year are eligible to attend. The cost is

$125 per camper.

The school also is hosting an Incoming Freshman Camp from June

20-July 21. The camp will run from noon-1:30 p.m. Monday though

Thursday each week. The cost is $150 per camper.
