College receives grant for baby simulator

Orange Coast College has received a $42,000 grant from the George

Hoag Family Foundation to purchase a baby simulator for health

students.

The Baby Sim, which is set to arrive on campus this summer, is a

replica of a 3- to 6-month-old infant, complete with clenched fists

and a layer of artificial baby fat. Students in the School of Allied

Health Professionals will use the device this fall.

According to spokesman Jim Carnett, Orange Coast College is the

first community college in America to have a Baby Sim on campus.

“This new simulator will prepare Orange Coast College allied

health students to face critical events involving babies that are

routinely encountered in real-world healthcare situations,” said

Kevin Ballinger, dean of the Consumer and Health Sciences Division,

in a news release. “Babies are our most vulnerable patients, and OCC

wants its students to be fully competent in dealing with any crisis

that might arise.”

Twilight park tour to explain history, habitats

The Fairview Park Friends Fundraising Committee will host a summer

twilight tour and train ride at 6 p.m. June 25. The public is invited

to hear about the history of Fairview Park, its plant habitats,

endangered species, and restoration projects, during a tour led by

Parks and Recreation Commissioner Bob Graham.

To attend the free event, meet at the picnic shelter on the west

side of the park. For information call (714)754-5698 or visit
