Costa Mesa National Little League

Minor A

Mets 4, Giants 3: Christian Aguilar gave up two hits and struck

out eight in five scoreless innings to lead the Costa Mesa National

Little League Minor A Mets to a 4-3 victory over the Giants

Wednesday. The victory moved the Mets into the league championship

game and guaranteed them a spot in the District 62 Tournament of

Champions. Aguilar was helped by great defense, including two double

plays by Jesse Paz.

The Mets broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth. Max

Hume and Matt Thomas walked, and with two outs, Brandon Kingsley hit

a two-run double. The Mets scored two more in the fifth on hits by

Paz and Aaron Wood. The Giants rallied in the sixth, scoring three

runs and putting the tying run on third with two outs, but Wood

struck out the final batter to win the game.

Cubs 10, Pirates 9: Trailing, 9-2, in the fourth inning, the Cubs

rallied to tie the score and force extra innings in the Minor A

playoff game May 25. Ray Barkis drove in three runs with a pop fly

over the first baseman’s head. Dylan Bentley drove in another run

with a hard single, Jared Payzant reached and scored on Chad

Fackler’s hit. Robert Sullivan tied the score with a bases-loaded

triple.

After being postponed because of darkness, the game picked up the

next day and the Cubs scored the winning run with two outs on a

single by Fackler and a double to the fence by Jake Stone.

Minor B

Dodgers 4, Cardinals 3: The Dodgers advanced to the Minor B

championship game and earned a spot in the Tournament of Champions

with this victory Wednesday, a pitchers’ duel between the Dodgers’

Tyler Owens and the Cardinals’ Garrett Kahre. Owens helped his own

cause in the first, hitting a ground-rule double to center to drive

in Garrett Deutsch from second base. Dante Capoccia then knocked in

Owens with a hit and Bill Crosson singled in Capoccia. Garet

Henscheid (3 for 3, double, two runs) and Chase Whitaker (2 for 3,

one RBI) and Adam Ditt (1 for 3) led the Cardinals’ offense, but

thanks to great defensive plays by Crosson, Deutsch and Capoccia, the

Cardinals were held to only one run in the first four innings.

Capoccia doubled and scored the Dodgers’ final run in the fourth

on Erik Rasmussen’s single. The Cardinals closed the gap in the fifth

when Henscheid doubled in Jackson Letterman and scored on Whittaker’s

second hit to make it 4-3. Capoccia closed out the game in the sixth,

striking out the side for the save.

Dodgers 14, Pirates 4: The Dodgers had 14 hits in the victory on

May 25, which moved them into the Minor B semifinals. Tyler Owens

gave up only two runs and one hit, striking out five. Owens also led

the Dodgers’ offense with two triples, three RBIs and three runs.

Dante Capoccia (3 for 3, two RBIs), Estefany Ramirez (2 for 2,

double, one RBI), Josh Godwin (2 for 2, one RBI), Branden Arecyut (2

for 3, double, one RBI) and Garrett Deutsch (1 for 1, three runs)

also contributed.

T-ball

Phillies, Rockies: The T-ball Rockies were impressive at bat

during their final game of the season Saturday. Justin Martinez

smashed the ball over the first baseman’s head to advance the

runners. Christian Ferrara nailed the ball off the tee to right field

for a two-run single and Nick Hendricks continued the hitting streak

with a solid hit through the infield to score a run.

In the second inning, Christian Muniz and Raleigh Lynaugh each

sent powerful hits up the middle, followed by a two-run double to

left by Christian Pruitt. In the third inning, the Rockies’ clutch

hitter, Blake Hunt, blasted a grand slam to center. The Rockies’

catcher, Travis Hastings, made it tough for the Phillies to score by

guarding home plate and saved numerous runs by applying the tag. Ian

Fowler made several key defensive plays, including grabbing a

bouncing grounder, then diving to first base for the out. Connor Hamm

contributed to the defense with several fantastic stops at third

base.

Cubs, Marlins: Capping a remarkable T-ball season, the Cubs’ Jacob

Bayley received the game ball for driving in two runs in the second

inning. Spencer Stern and Katie Kuttler each had a double. Michael

Aherne played well at third base, tagging two Marlins out.

Newport Beach Little League

AAA

Cubs 11, Yankees 2: The Cubs defeated the Yankees, 11-2, in the

Triple-A championship game Friday.

The Cubs scored five runs in the third and two more in the fourth,

while adding one in the fifth to tally eight runs over the three

innings. The Cubs’ pitching of Matt McCoy, Erik Ctvrlik and Drew

Olson held the Yankees to just two runs.

The Yankees’ Tyler McPhillips slammed a triple in the first inning

and scored on a base hit by Nick McGinness. In the second inning,

McGinness scored on a hit by Griffin Peacock. But the Cubs’ pitching

then retired the side in each of the last four innings.

AA

Padres 7, Red Sox 5: In a close and hard-fought championship game

Saturday, the Padres outlasted the Red Sox to take home the winning

trophy. The Red Sox started off the scoring with Cole Martin’s single

in the second inning and Ryan Hamm driving him in with a solid hit.

The Padres answered with Christopher Beyrooty bringing in Parker

Reposa with a line drive. Beyrooty scored after Gunnar Logan drew a

walk to bring him in. The third inning was all Padres, as Charlie

Griffin, Jeff Johnston, Braden Brahs, and Conner Kelter all scored

with Brahs tripling and Johnston picking up a double.

The Red Sox drew close in the fourth, with Brett Greenlee, Tim

Strader, and Ben Humphreys all scoring. Brahs picked up an insurance

run in the fifth to secure the win. Both teams had stellar defensive

plays, with Humphreys diving for a hard-hit ball to center, catching

it and firing to second to pick up a double play.

For the Padres, AJ Sanchez, Cole Friedman, Matt Hurst and Nate

Pozin made big plays to stop any Sox rally. Hurst picked up the final

out on a hard-hit grounder by Humphreys to shortstop that he scooped

up and fired to Brahs at first to beat the runner by a half step.

James Barrett and Kelter were solid behind the plate to help their

pitchers, while Brahs, Hurst, and Griffin had their most productive

game of the season.
