UCI duo ousted
UC Irvine junior Ricky Barnes finished ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3 minutes, 53.85 seconds, while junior teammate Mike
Beerer’s mark of 190 feet, 5 inches in the hammer throw was not good
enough to qualify for the final Saturday at the NCAA West track and
field regional at the University of Oregon.
The two Anteaters were the program’s final competitors attempting
to advance to the NCAA championships in June, so the UCI season comes
to a close.
Yelsey, partner bested
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High product Anne Yelsey, a junior at
Stanford, finished runner-up in the NCAA women’s tennis doubles final
contested Saturday at the University of Georgia.
Yelsey and partner Amber Liu, a junior, were defeated by the
Stanford duo of senior Erin Burdette and junior Alice Barnes, 6-3,
6-4, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Yelsey and Liu, also unseeded, knocked off the No. 2 seed to reach
the final.
Yelsey helped the Cardinal win the NCAA team title last week.
UCI’s Chen promoted
* BASKETBALL: Steve Chen, 28, who served as the UC Irvine men’s
basketball team’s head manager the last three seasons, has been named
assistant coach.
Chen, whose previous duties with the Anteaters also included those
of video coordinator and administrative assistant, fills the staff
vacancy created when Todd Lee became head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan
last week.
