Laguna water polo downs rival Corona

The Laguna Beach Water Polo 12-and-under boys’ team competed last

weekend at a round-robin tournament in Corona del Mar.

The highlight of the tournament for the locals came against rival

and host Corona Del Mar, a match in which Laguna rolled to a 17-7

victory in a five-period contest.

The Laguna Beach squad is composed of Riley Browne, Nicky Brunner

, Jimmy Caris, Spencer Dodson, Hunter French, Erik Henrikson, Drew

Kanner, Adam Kravitz, Nile Kogel, Tyler Mancuso, Nolan McConnell and

Alex Shapero.

In other 12-and-under action:

Laguna’s 12-U team took on the Corona del Mar boys’ 12-and-under

team, and came away with an impressive, 10-7 victory.

Laguna jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter on goals by

Jessie Holecheck, Melena Masson and Riley Duncan, and extended its

lead to 4-0 through two quarters when Yoshi Anderson scored.

Edy Manetta blocked four shot attempts by Corona del Mar in the

first two periods.

Goals by Anderson and Manetta in the third period helped Laguna

take a 6-4 lead into the fourth period.

There, goals by Holechek, Riley Duncan and Manetta concluded the

Laguna scoring.

In 12-U girls’ action:

Laguna also added Corona del Mar’s girls’ 12-and-under team to its

list of victims by scoring a 9-5 road victory.

As it had against the Corona del Mar boys, Laguna jumped out to an

early lead, this time, taking a 2-0 first quarter edge on goals by

Holecheck and Duncan. They extended the lead to 5-2 after two

quarters, with Holechek and Duncan again providing the scoring.

The teams traded goals in the third period, with Duncan scoring

for Laguna, which gave the visitors a 6-3 advantage.

Jessie Shusko blocked three shot attempts by Corona del Mar in the

period to preserve the lead.

Goals by Anderson, Holechek and Shusko in the fourth quarter

completed Laguna’s scoring output.
