Coastal Commission supports yard plan

The California Coastal Commission staff has recommended approval of a

two-story building at the Act V parking lot on Laguna Canyon Road

that is key to the city’s proposal for relocation of some maintenance

yard functions there.

The city’s proposed plan for development of Act V will be

considered by the commission on June 7 in San Pedro.

“This is excellent news,” said Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider.

“If it is approved, it means that our maintenance yard project can

move forward.”

The 30-page staff report recommends using alternate development

standards to allow the two-story building. Conditions attached to the

recommended approval are similar to the conditions heard by the

commission at the last hearing in July 2004, prior to the compromise

plan hammered out by Pearson-Schneider and Councilwoman Toni Iseman.

City officials are still reviewing specifics, but as of Monday saw

nothing of significant concern, Pearson-Schneider said.
